In response to the growing global threat to banana production, three lecturers from the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), actively participated in a co-design workshop held in Manila in March 2026. The delegation included Prof. Dr. Ir. Siti Subandiyah, M.Agr.Sc. from the Department of Plant Protection, along with Mrs. Valentina Dwi Suci Handayani, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D. from the department of agronomy and Mrs. Alia Bihrajihant Raya, S.P., M.P., Ph.D. from the Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics. They are part of a collaborative research team under ACIAR, focusing on the management of banana wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4 (TR4). read more

On February 16, 2026, a delegation of lecturers from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted an academic visit to University of Southeastern Philippines in Davao City, Philippines, to attend and actively participate in the international scientific forum titled International Seminar on Abaca (Musa textilis): Production Systems, Disease Challenges, and Fiber Utilization. The event was organized by the College of Agriculture and Related Sciences, Tagum-Mabini Campus, and took place at the AVR, Agri Building, Mabini Unit, Davao de Oro. The seminar brought together academics, researchers, and practitioners from various countries who share a common interest in the development of natural fiber commodities, particularly abaca (Musa textilis), which is widely recognized for its high economic value and strong potential in sustainable industries. read more

In February 16, 2026, a group of lecturers from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) conducted an academic visit and collaboration initiative to an abaca fiber processing center in Davao City, Philippines. The delegation included Prof. Dr. Ir. Siti Subandiyah, M.Agr.Sc., Prof. Tri Joko, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., and Dr. Ir. Arif Wibowo, M.Agr.Sc. from the Department of Plant Protection UGM, as well as Prof. Ir. Alva Edy Tontowi, M.Sc., Ph.D., IPU., ASEAN Eng. from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering UGM. On March 11, 2026, the Department of Plant Protection Universitas Gadjah Mada, held a yudisium (graduation ceremony) for six students. The March I 2026 ceremony was held in the Meeting Room of the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, 3rd Floor, Building A1.

The graduates, consisting of students from the Undergraduate Program in Plant Protection and the Master’s Program in Plant Pest Science, shared reflections and experiences from their academic journey at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada. They expressed that studying in the fields of Plant Protection, Phytopathology, and Plant Pest Science provided valuable experiences, including the development of both hard and soft skills, comprehensive scientific understanding and its practical applications, as well as the expansion of professional networks. In addition to expressing gratitude for their educational journey, the graduates also conveyed their hopes for the department’s future development—aspiring for the Department of Plant Protection to continue progressing, producing outstanding and impactful graduates, and for all lecturers to be granted continued health and well-being. read more

In March 2026, graduate students from the Master’s Program in Plant Pest Science conducted a field practicum on Insect Taxonomy and Systematics at Taman Lansia Ceria (TLC) Bethesda Yakkum and the nearby Kali Kuning area. This activity was designed as an integral part of experiential learning, aimed at enhancing students’ understanding of insect diversity, identification techniques, and collection methods in natural habitats. The practicum was supervised by Dr. Prayogo Probo Asmoro, S.P., M.Si. and Dr. Suputa, S.P., M.P., with support from teaching assistants Manda Rahma Cyntia, S.P. and Hanifan, S.P., M.Sc., who actively facilitated the technical aspects of the fieldwork. read more

On February 11, 2026, students from the Plant Protection Study Program conducted a field practicum in Agricultural Nematology at the UGM Center for Agro-Technology Innovation (PIAT) in Berbah. The activity involved 50 students from the 2024 cohort enrolled in Agricultural Nematology Practicum groups A3.1 and A3.2. The practicum was supervised by lecturers Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Maulana, S.Hut., M.Sc. and Dr. Adyatma Irawan Santosa, S.P., M.Sc., with additional support from teaching assistants who facilitated both technical and academic aspects of the session. read more

In 12 March 2026, a warm sense of togetherness marked a communal iftar gathering organized by lecturers and student researchers affiliated with the Pest Laboratory of the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Held at the IMB Restaurant, Department of Fisheries, the event served as a meaningful occasion to strengthen academic relationships while fostering more relaxed and open communication beyond formal settings. The gathering was attended by distinguished lecturers—Dr. Ir. Arman Wijonarko, M.Sc., Dr. Ir. Nugroho Susetya Putra, M.Si., and Dr. Prayogo Probo Asmoro, S.P., M.Si.—as well as undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students actively conducting research in pest science and utilizing the laboratory facilities. read more

The Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Gadjah Mada successfully held an international guest lecture in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Biology, Germany, on Monday, March 2, 2026. The event took place at the Venture Room, Agrotropica Learning Center (AGLC), and featured Claire McCann, Ph.D., as the keynote speaker. She delivered a presentation titled “Evolutionary Genomics of Ralstonia syzygii subsp. celebesensis,” highlighting recent advances in the study of evolutionary genomics of plant pathogens, particularly bacteria affecting horticultural crops. read more

The Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada, held an international guest lecture on Monday, March 2, 2026, at the Venture Room, 6th Floor of the AGLC Building. The event featured three distinguished scholars from leading universities in Japan: Dr. Sota Yamamoto from Kagoshima University, Dr. Nabeshima Tomoyuki from Yamagata University, and Dr. Sota Koeda from Kindai University. During the session, the speakers presented several research topics related to recent developments in horticultural science and plant diseases in the Asia–Pacific region. The topics included Dispersal Routes of Chili Peppers in the Asia–Pacific Region, which discussed the historical and geographical pathways of chili pepper distribution in the Asia–Pacific; Studies on Cuticle Cracking in Cherry Tomato Fruit, which examined the phenomenon of cuticle cracking in cherry tomatoes; and Genetic Diversity of Begomoviruses and Resistance-based Disease Management in Vegetables, which highlighted the genetic diversity of Begomoviruses and strategies for disease management based on plant resistance.
