    On 15 January 2026, the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Universitas Gadjah Mada, conducted a graduation (yudisium) ceremony for six students. The January I 2026 graduation ceremony was held in the Meeting Room of the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, 3rd Floor, Building A1.

    During the event, the six graduates shared reflections and experiences from their academic journey at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada. They expressed that studying in the Plant Protection, Plant Pathology, and Entomology study programs provided valuable experiences, including the development of both hard and soft skills, comprehensive scientific understanding and its application, as well as the expansion of professional networks. In addition to expressing gratitude for having completed their studies in the Plant Protection Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada, the graduates also conveyed their hopes for the future development of the department, namely that the Department of Plant Protection will continue to grow, produce excellent and impactful graduates, and that all lecturers will always be granted good health.     A Statistics Student from Universitas Islam Indonesia Conducts Internship on Bioinformatics Data Analysis

    A student from Universitas Islam Indonesia, Faiz Fadhlirobby, from the Statistics Study Program, carried out an internship at the Nematology Laboratory, Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada, with a focus on bioinformatics. The internship was conducted over a one-month period, from 27 January 2026 to 27 February 2026. During the program, Faiz Fadhlirobby was supervised by Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Maulana, S.Hut., M.Sc.

    The activities carried out included data analysis, encompassing data exploration and the selection of expressed genes in two strains of the nematode Meloidogyne hapla on two different host plants. This internship is expected to produce an output in the form of an internship report containing the results of the analysis and the methods applied by the student. read more

    A Fast Track Graduate Student in Plant Pathology Receives a Scholarship from PT BISI International

    Rossa Wulandari, a student of the Fast Track Graduate Program in Plant Pathology, has been selected as one of the recipients of a scholarship awarded by PT BISI International. The scholarship amounts to IDR 10,000,000 per semester and is granted for the third and fourth semesters of her graduate studies.

    The scholarship award ceremony was held during the Open Senate Meeting in commemoration of the 79th Anniversary of the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada, on Friday, 26 September 2025, at the Prof. Harjono Danoesastro Auditorium, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada. During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed with several strategic partners in the fields of industry and education, including PT BISI International, which was represented by the Production Director of PT BISI International, Ir.     Collaboration between Universitas Gadjah Mada and PT Syngenta in Theory- and Practice-Based Nematology Training

    To enhance knowledge and competence in the field of nematology, PT Syngenta assigned several staff members—Agus Musthofa Ali, S.P., Henty Ira Fajar, S.P., Pudjo Rahardjo, S.P., Irvan Insanul Muttaqin, S.P., and Dyah Ayu Wulansari, S.P., M.Sc.—to participate in a nematology training program conducted over three days, from 9 to 11 January 2026, at the Nematology Laboratory, Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada.

    The training activities were supervised and guided directly by nematology lecturers from the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, namely Prof. Dr. Ir. Siwi Indarti, M.P. and Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Maulana, S.Hut., M.Sc., assisted by Ms. Tiara Indah Wahyuni, S.P., M.Sc. and Ms. Arifah Andriyanti.     To enhance knowledge and competence in the field of nematology, PT Agri Makmur Pertiwi assigned one of its staff members, Mr. Hasbi, S.P., M.Sc., to participate in a nematology training program conducted over two days, on 14–15 January 2026, at the Nematology Laboratory, Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada.

    The training activities were supervised and guided directly by lecturers in the field of nematology from the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, namely Prof. Dr. Ir. Siwi Indarti, M.P. and Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Maulana, S.Hut., M.Sc., assisted by Ms. Tiara Indah Wahyuni, S.P., M.Sc.     Enhancement of Fungal Identification Competency through Mycology Training at UGM

    To improve knowledge in the field of nematology, PT Agri Makmur Pertiwi assigned two staff members, Mr. Hasby, S.P., M.P. and Ms. Agistha Melyndasari, S.Tr.P., to participate in a mycology training program conducted at the Clinical Laboratory, Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada, located in Building A2A, 3rd Floor. The fungal training was held over two days, on Monday–Tuesday, 12–13 January 2026.

    The training activities began with an opening session led by the Head of the Department, followed by a coffee break. The first day’s material started with a discussion on fungal classification systems delivered by Dr. Suryanti, S.P., M.P., followed by a presentation on fungal morphological characteristics, particularly Fusarium, including Fusarium graminearum which is synonymous with Gibberella zeae, by Dr. Ir. Arif Wibowo, M.Agr.Sc. After a break, participants attended a session on and practiced seed-borne fungal detection using blotter and agar methods on maize seeds, as well as techniques for isolating Fusarium fungi from plant material and soil, guided by Dr. Suryanti, S.P., M.P.     Insect Trail – Exploring Insects, Enjoying Moments, Building Bonds

    July 26–27, 2025. A field trip was held by the Master in Pest Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada. The activity was conducted at Pondok Alam Merapi, Pakem District, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. This trip was part of the Practicum in Insect Taxonomy and Systematics course by Dr. Prayogo Probo Asmoro, which aimed to provide master’s students with hands-on experience in recognizing, identifying, and observing various types of insects in their natural environment. The activity was attended by students, lecturers, and practicum assistants. read more

    MPS UGM Hosted a Guest Lecture with James Cook University and MARS

    Cocoa is an economically important plantation crop, particularly in overseas trade. Cocoa bean production is also largely affected by pest and disease infestations. How does a company respond to them with research and technology?

    The Master of Pest Science, Department of Plant Protection UGM organized a Guest Lecture by Jerome Niogret, Ph.D., from James Cook University and MARS, moderated by Prof. Y. Andi Trisyono. The event took place on July 8, 2025, at the Ventura Room, Agrotropica Learning Center (AGLC), Faculty of Agriculture, UGM. The session, “Advancing Cacao Resilience R&D in Pest and Disease Management from the Cocoa Industry,” was attended by 36 members offline and online via Zoom. The attendees consisted of students and lecturers from UGM and researchers from various institutions in Indonesia. read more

    In the era of modern agriculture, where technology and innovation play pivotal roles, pest management must evolve to meet the needs of the younger generation. By leveraging various technologies, such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT), we can enhance Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Indonesia. Consequently, a more holistic and sustainable approach is essential for the effective implementation of IPM in this contemporary agricultural landscape.

    Based on that issue, students of Master in Pest Science and Student Community of Pest Science (SCoPS), the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture UGM in partnership with the Entomology Society of Indonesia (PEI) held the 1st National Seminar of Seminar Ilmu Hama Tanaman Indonesia (SIMATANI) via hybrid on December 2, 2024. This seminar was opened by the head of the Department of Plant Protection, Prof. Tri Joko, S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., and the head of the Master in Pest Science study program, Dr. Suputa directly in the Ventura room of the Agrotropica Learning Center (AGLC), Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada. Following that, the Vice Dean of Research, Community Service, and Cooperation, Prof. Subejo S.P., M.Sc., Ph.D., delivered a speech regarding support for the conduct of SIMATANI. read more
